China Festival at 51福利社

The annual festival commemorates the tradition of the Chinese Moon Festival, which is celebrated in China in mid-autumn. The first China Festival at 51福利社 was held on 51福利社鈥檚 main campus on September 27, 2014. Featured events included dance and music performances, ping-pong tournament finals, hands-on activities, Chinese art exhibitions and informational display booths. Over the years, this annual event has become a new tradition at Kalamazoo, and the South West Michigan area.

"The China Festival is a fun event that helps to break down prejudices that develop from the unknown" says Dr. Paulo Zagalo-Melo, associate provost of the Haenicke Institute for Global Education. "It gives the Kalamazoo and surrounding communities the opportunity to learn about and explore Chinese culture, contributing to making our children more globally minded and to fostering mutual understanding."

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation, Asian Initiatives will not host the China Festival in 2021.
