Meet McKenna: Physical and health education teacher education

McKenna

At first I was an elementary education major, but I didn't like being in the classroom and I'm definitely more of an active teacher. But I always wanted to be a teacher, so physical education was a better fit for me.

I think it helps us as a future educator because it will get us to the point where we can change certain things in our class when they're not going right.

I think it's a very fun and energetic, exciting and accepting program. I think if you really want to work with kids at any age level, it really helps you interact with them and help them to become physically active. So that's all in here in the program.

Our nation and state鈥檚 growing focus on the broader notion of wellness has strengthened the preference for careers teaching physical and health education to students. The Michigan State Board of Education has approved new teacher preparation standards for physical and health education. Western Michigan University is the first institution in the state to offer this mandated combined endorsement with dual certification in physical education and health education to teach students in kindergarten through grade 12.
