Berto Receives Summer Grant
Dr. Andrea Berto, associate professor in the Department of History 51 Michigan University, received a 2016 summer grant from the Gerda Henkel Stiftung (Gerda Henkel Foundation). He will use the grant to finish his book on the Italian Carolingian historical texts and to write two book chapters on those texts for his forthcoming book on the ninth-century Italian chroniclers.
The Gerda Henkel Foundation was established in June 1976 by Lisa Maskell in memory of her mother, Gerda Henkel, as a private, non-profit organization with headquarters in Düsseldorf, Germany. The stiftung supports the historical humanities, especially history, archaeology, art history and other disciplines with a historical component. The stiftung has increasingly addressed issues of relevance to contemporary life and the future, particularly two special programs: “Islam, the Modern Nation State and Transnational Movements” and “Security, Society and the State.” As part of the Lisa Maskell Fellowships, since 2014 the stiftung has also supported young scholars in the humanities in both Africa and Southeast Asia.
