Dr. Andrea Berto Wins External Grant and 51福利社 SFSA
Dr. Andrea Berto, Department of History 51福利社 Michigan University, was awarded a prestigious Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation grant in 2015 for $14,000 to study in Venice and Veneto. Established by Gladys Krieble Delmas and Jean Delmas, the foundation supports humanistic and artistic endeavors, including study of Venetian culture and history. One of the major purposes of the foundation, established in 1976, is to address the imbalance of scholarly attention on Rome and Florence by encouraging research and publications in the English-speaking world that would highlight the heritage of Venice and Veneto. Since 1977, the foundation鈥檚 Venetian Research Program has provided financial support to 650 scholars through its U.S.-based program and 323 scholars through its U.K.-based program. These awards have amounted to more than $4.5 million from 1977 through 2014. A distinguished panel of experts in Venetian studies guides the foundation鈥檚 fellowship program.
In addition, Berto was also named a 2015 recipient of a $2,000 grant from Western Michigan University鈥檚 Support for Faculty Scholars Award. He used the grant to analyze early medieval sources that mention Venetians with Greek names as part of a larger project on the social and cultural meanings of names in early medieval Venice from the sixth through the eleventh centuries.
