Ashley Atkins - On Lamentation

When: Mar 2, 4pm
Where: 2500 Knauss Hall
What: "On Lamentation"
Ashley Atkins will present a portion of her investigation into the "art of grief," the topic of a symposium she organized at this year's British Society of Aesthetics meeting and which will form the basis of a collection of papers with the British Journal of Aesthetics later this year. Her talk, “On Lamentation,” explores the privileged role of lament at the foundation of a variety of art forms, including modern dance, and engages closely with Martha Graham's dance by the same name. Her talk will focus on one of the more unsettling challenges that might be thought to be presented by lament and its close relationship with the arts: its calling into question any hard and fast distinction between grief understood as private emotion and grief understood as performance.
Dr. Ashley Atkins is Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy
This talk is free and open to the public. No tickets or registration required.
