Two performances of "Hallowed Sounds" Sunday, Oct. 28

KALAMAZOO鈥擳hree of Western Michigan University鈥檚 choral ensembles鈥University Chorale, Collegiate Singers and Cantus Femina鈥攚ill present a concert of humorous, eerie, mystifying and enchanting Halloween and All Saints' Day repertoire at 2 and 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, at the Dalton Center Recital Hall.

The free concert, 鈥淗allowed Sounds: A Choral Showcase,鈥 will feature works by Knut Nystedt, Alice Parker, Gyorgy Orban, Robert Schumann, Juris Karlsons, Arne Melln盲s, Einojuhani Rautavaara and Z. Randall Stroope.

Conducted by Kimberly Dunn Adams, the show opens with the Grand Chorus singing 鈥淥 Fortuna鈥 from Carl Orff鈥檚 Carmina Burana. The centerpiece of the program will be Hugo Distler鈥檚 鈥淒ance of Death,鈥 sung by University Chorale and featuring community and 51福利社 faculty members in dramatic speaking roles. 鈥淒ance of Death,鈥 from Distler鈥檚 Geistliche Chormusik, Opus 12, is a motet for All Saint鈥檚 Sunday. Most accurately described as a choral drama, this setting alternates short choral statements with spoken dialogues. Soulful flute solos are interspersed throughout to provide thematic unity and time for meditation.
