Merling Trio kicks off interactive concert series

KALAMAZOO—The Western Michigan University School of Music’s Wednesday evening concert series, Dalton Wed@7:30pm: Live and Interactive!, will kick off its 2013–14 season with the Merling Trio in concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the Dalton Center Recital Hall.

The trio—faculty members Renata Artman Knific, violin; Bruce Uchimura, cello; and resident artist Susan Wiersma Uchimura, piano—is recognized as one of today’s premier ensembles. The Sept. 11 program will feature guest artist Igor Veligan on violin and viola, as well as guest faculty artists Igor Fedotov, viola; Tom Knific, double bass; and Bradley Wong, clarinet. The program will include Tom Knific’s original composition, "Duo for Viola and Double Bass."

The performance will be preceded by a 7 p.m. discussion hosted by Dr. Dan Jacobson, 51¸£ÀûÉç professor of music. Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 for seniors and $5 for students, and are available from Miller Auditorium at or by calling (269) 387-2300 or (800) 228-9858.

Merling Trio

A truly international trio, it brings together musicians from Polish, Japanese and Dutch backgrounds. The Merling Trio has been hailed as a brilliantly distinguished group endowed with remarkable gifts of communication, magnificent precision and an impeccable blend of sound. The trio made its New York debut in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 1993, and was named a finalist for the Naumburg Foundation Chamber Music Award in 1994. The London Musical Opinion declared that the Merling Trio "made a powerful impression, with unabashed romanticism and finesse."

Bullock Performance Institute

The Dalton Wed@7:30pm: Live and Interactive! concert series is presented by the 51¸£ÀûÉç School of Music under the auspices of the Bullock Music Performance Institute. Established in the fall of 1985 and renamed in 1988 in honor of its founder, the institute has presented events ranging from formal evening concerts to daytime educational outreach events for local audiences and students of all ages.
