Flugelhornist opens School of Music's Wednesday night concert series
KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Critically acclaimed jazz flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny will open the 2015–16 Bullock Performance Institute’s concert series at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, in Western Michigan University's Dalton Center Recital Hall.
The performance will be preceded by a 7 p.m. discussion hosted by Dr. Robert White. Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 for seniors and $5 for students, and are available from Miller Auditorium or by calling (269) 387-2300 or (800) 228-9858.
Matheny will lead a quartet consisting of 51¸£ÀûÉç faculty jazz bassist Tom Knific, pianist Gene Knific, and drummer Sean Dobbins.
First introduced to jazz audiences in the 1990s as the protégé of Art Farmer,, Matheny is celebrated for his warm tone and masterful technique. He has been lauded by the International Review of Music as "one of the most expressive improvisers of his generation."
Bullock Music Performance Institute
Established in the fall of 1985 and renamed in 1988 in honor of its founder, the institute's mission is to add to the already rich cultural life of Kalamazoo by creating opportunities to develop closer personal and artistic ties between audience and performer.
