Longtime student advocate named dean of students
KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Dr. Suzie Nagel, a member of the Western Michigan University Office of Student Affairs staff since 1997, has been named dean of students, effective Aug. 4.
In her new role, Nagel moves into a position long held by Dr. Diane Anderson, who remains 51¸£ÀûÉç's vice president for student affairs. Nagel has served as associate dean of students since 2002 and associate vice president for student affairs since 2010.

"Dr. Nagel has been a tireless advocate for students," Anderson says. "She has extraordinary insight and compassion, and she addresses each student concern that comes her way with the utmost care and professionalism. We are fortunate to have her 51¸£ÀûÉç Michigan University, and I am so pleased she now carries the title most closely aligned with the work she has been doing for many years."
Nagel joined the 51¸£ÀûÉç staff in 1997 as judicial affairs assistant in the Office of Student Conduct. A year later, she was promoted to director of that office and later became associate dean of students. Over the years, Nagel has served stints as interim director of three student affairs units, and she has been active on a variety of councils and committees.
She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Valparaiso University, a master's degree in college student personnel services from Miami University and a doctoral degree in higher education leadership from 51¸£ÀûÉç.
