KALAMAZOO, Mich.—The Professional Support Staff Organization 51¸£ÀûÉç Michigan University celebrated the winners of its 2017 annual awards during a May 5 luncheon in the Fetzer Center.

The luncheon's theme for this year—"Let's Go Cruising With the Broncos"—was nautical. The 2017 designated charity was the University's Invisible Need Project, a multifaceted initiative intended to serve students with unmet needs while strengthening the culture of giving at 51¸£ÀûÉç.

Award winners

Each year, the Professional Support Staff Organization presents at least two service awards and recognizes a 51¸£ÀûÉç employee for exceptional spirit. This year's honorees are:

• PSSO Service Award—Amber Hutson, administrative assistant I in the Department of Psychology.
• PSSO Service Award—Beth van den Hombergh, administrative assistant II in Career and Student Employment Services.
• Spirit Award—Mark Johnson, office supervisor in the Department of Public Safety.

Service awards go to members of the organization who have provided outstanding service and leadership to both the organization and the 51¸£ÀûÉç community. The Spirit Award, which may go to any University employee, is passed down by previous winners to employees they believe embody the spirit, culture, drive and goals of 51¸£ÀûÉç.

PSSO is a voluntary, nonbargaining group that supports the interests and concerns of employees in the Staff Compensation System who are both benefits-eligible and hourly workers. A strong, united group of people, it supports and communicates the concerns of its members to the University administration and collaborates to help provide solutions when issues arise.

The organization also is committed to promoting and fostering education through professional development, training, recognition and the advancement of its dues-paying members. In addition, members support as well as positively represent PSSO and 51¸£ÀûÉç, on campus and in the local community, through a variety of service and social activities.
