New 51 campus space highlights local attractions, engages community members and enriches students’ experience
KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Western Michigan University and Discover Kalamazoo are partnering to provide a designated space on the first floor of the 51 Student Center to showcase the deepening connections between the campus community and the vibrant Kalamazoo area.
A signing ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 16, will mark the opening of “The Corner,” an interactive hub where Discover Kalamazoo staff will engage with students, faculty and visitors Mondays through Thursdays, showcasing the rich cultural, recreational and business offerings of Kalamazoo County. Located between MiPi Pizza and the Mosaic Room, attendees will have the chance to explore the updated space, which includes newly installed displays showcasing Kalamazoo’s vibrant downtown and local attractions. Complimentary Discover Kalamazoo publications will also be available to the public.
This collaboration aims to enhance the visibility of local attractions, increase community engagement and enrich the 51 student experience by bringing more of Kalamazoo’s unique offerings directly to campus.
Jeff Breneman, 51’s vice president for government relations, will speak at the ceremony, and says, “This collaboration underscores our commitment to fostering stronger connections between our University and the wider Kalamazoo community. To ensure our students benefit from hands-on opportunities, we must build meaningful relationships with corporate and community stakeholders. We are excited about the opportunities this space will create.”
Jane Ghosh, president and CEO of Discover Kalamazoo, adds, “We are thrilled to be a part of this initiative, which will make it easier for 51’s campus community to explore all our area has to offer.
This initiative was made possible with the financial support of the Monroe-Brown Foundation, whose generous contribution has helped transform “The Corner” into a space that bridges the campus and community, providing valuable resources to both.
