Regeneration research has increased in popularity with significant advances in identifying both stem cell populations and the mechanisms that regulate cell growth and tissue repair. However, much less is known about the means by which these newly produced tissues (re)establish a functional shape. uses the remarkable regenerative abilities of the planarian flatworm (which is able to regrow all tissues, even brain) to investigate how tissue shape is regenerated following injury. The goal of the lab group is to understand how cell migration, cell division, gene regulation and even cell death are coordinated across thousands of cells to ensure that regenerating flatworms always look like stereotypical planaria.
