General summary
Ensures the health and safety of individuals at all University campus locations.
Major duties
- Responds to requests to collect hazardous, infectious and other regulated wastes for disposal within required timeframes.
- Assists with other environmental concerns or emergencies involving air, storm water or sewer usage.
- Trains University personnel to meet requirements for hazardous waste, storm water, forklift and emergency responses.
- Informs staff of environmental regulatory changes that affect the University community.
- Oversees the completion of relevant state and federal agency reports.
- May gather samples for asbestos analysis and monitor asbestos projects conducted by outside contractors.
- May plan and execute fire and tornado drills as required by the State of Michigan
- May administer and carry out claim investigations for the Workers’ Compensation benefit program.
Minimum qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.
Required education
- Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required experience
- Three years' relevant experience.

- Relevant industry certification.
Physical requirements
Light work with some physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds, but rarely moving more than 25 to 50 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc.
