ELRT alumnus selected for Innovative Educator Corps

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—William Renner III (M.A.'11, educational leadership), alumnus of the 51¸£ÀûÉç College of Education and Human Development, became part of the first class of seven Innovative Educator Corps (IEC). The IEC is sponsored by the Michigan Department of Education. Each teacher receives $5,000 to implement their innovation and $5,000 to share with a regional intermediate school district. According to interim state superintendent Sheila Alles, in order “to continue building Michigan to become a Top 10 education state in 10 years, we need to take innovative and effective teaching practices and share them with every teacher in the state.â€

Renner, a computer science teacher in Hastings, teamed up with Gus Calbert, a Ph.D. candidate in educational leadership in the 51¸£ÀûÉç College of Education and Human Development, to create the Lewis Walker Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnic Relations (WIRE) youth development program's math and science camps.
