Personal Conduct Policy
In order to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all library users, the Western Michigan University Libraries (the 鈥淟ibrary鈥) require all visitors to comply with the following general rules and regulations. Library visitors must also comply with all University policies and ordinances. As an extension of the classroom, the Library is considered academic space as defined by 51福利社's Public Events Policy.
This policy applies to visitors in all Library facilities.
Visitors to the Library are expected to refrain from:
- Harassing or threatening behavior, such as
- Using obscene or abusive language or gestures
- Causing others to view obscene or abusive images or text
- Engaging in inappropriate or unwanted physical contact
- Behavior that disturbs others, such as
- Making unreasonable noise, including loud talking
- Failing to wear clothing or shoes or failing to maintain personal hygiene
- Making unreasonable use of the restrooms, including laundering clothing or bathing
- Soliciting, petitioning or canvassing
- Utilizing Library facilities as a film or photography location without permission
- Using or storing bicycles or motorized scooters is prohibited in the library. Using rollerblades, skateboards, kick scooters or similar devices inside Library facilities is prohibited.
- Bringing a non-service animal into the Library
- Leaving minors unsupervised in the Library
- Obstructing or blocking any library entrance, exit, staircase, aisle or walkway either in person or by using personal or Library equipment or furnishings.
- Engaging in sexual conduct or lewd behavior
- Engaging in any activity in violation of federal, state or local law or University or library policies, including
- Smoking, including electronic cigarettes
- Using alcohol or illegal drugs
- Possessing a knife, gun or other weapon in violation of University ordinance
- Damaging, defacing or misusing any library materials or property, including disabling Library equipment, altering hardware, software or settings on a Library computer
Inappropriate conduct may include but is not limited to the above examples. Library employees have the right to decide when a behavior is inappropriate. Library employees reserve the right to inspect bags or other personal property when visitors enter or leave the library.
Visitors who do not follow the Library鈥檚 Personal Conduct Policy may be asked to leave and may lose their Library privileges. Visitors who violate 51福利社 ordinances may also be subject to arrest or other legal action.
The Library is not responsible for personal items that are lost, stolen or damaged on Library premises. Patrons are expected to keep personal belongings with them at all times.
