Minor in Race and Ethnic Relations
The Time is Now
“It is time to focus our energy, resources, and discourse on uprooting and eliminating the false ideology of a hierarchy of human value to grow what we value most: our common humanity. It is time to overturn this belief and to address its legacy, together. This is the work of TRHT and the responsibility we all share.” – Dr. Gail Christopher, retired Senior Advisor and Vice President for Truth Racial Healing and Transformation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
The world is changing…are you ready?
Globalization and immigration have led to a dramatic change in the United States and around the world. Peoples of European ancestry-who over time came to be known as white Americans-have been demographically, economically, and politically dominant throughout our history. But in 2011, for the first time ever, a majority of babies born in the United States were not of European ancestry.
In many countries, ethnic divisions and inequality continue to be a major source of conflict, while in other countries ethnic groups live together in harmony. Progress has been made in the United States toward building a multi-ethnic democracy, yet historically outmoded concepts of race persist, as do deeply rooted patterns of inequality.
What kind of future will we build together? Are you ready for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead? The Minor in Race and Ethnic Relations is designed to help you better understand:
- The complexities of our increasingly diverse society.
- How patterns of racial and ethnic relations in the United States are related to what is happening around the world.
- What you need to know to thrive professionally and to participate constructively in our increasingly diverse, multi-ethnic society.
