Sport management at 51��

The sport management program provides the student with the academic preparation and practical training required for success in the sport industry. Specifically, it prepares students for careers in professional sports, college athletics, amateur sports, youth sports or corporate positions with a sport-related component. Job functions in the sport industry include facility management, sport promotion and marketing, sport media, customer or community relations, sport sponsorship, licensing, sport information and sport law, etc.

Why did you choose sport management?

I chose sports management because sports have always been a big part of my life and it’s always been a dream of mine to work in professional sports.

Did you or do you play any sports? If so, what sport and how did that drive your decision?

Growing up I played soccer, football, basketball, baseball, and cross country but when I got to high school, I cut it down to football, basketball, and lacrosse.

Do you have a favorite faculty member at 51��?

My favorite faculty member is Dr. Lewis because he makes his classes very engaging and entertaining you rarely find yourself sitting in his class bored.

What are your career goals? What aspirations do you have in the field?

My career goals are to work my way up from scout to the General Manager of a professional sports team preferably in football or basketball. My aspirations are to travel the United States and maybe even the world looking for talent and finding some of the next great athletes.

Have you completed any internships for your program yet?

I have not completed any internships yet but I am always searching for opportunities!

What is your favorite 51�� recreational activity to do?

My favorite recreational activity to do is to go to the football games because you get to spend the morning tailgating hanging out with your friends then get to go to the game with a great atmosphere.

Your best friend is trying to decide where to go to school for sport management and asks you about 51��. What do you say?

51�� is a great community with the student body of a major university but it feels like a small school if you want it to. There’s always something to do whether it is a student organization, sporting event, or just going out in Kalamazoo to hang out with your friends. But also that the faculty care about your success and want you to do your best and they’re always willing to help you out.
